Dear FutureMe,
This is yourself again first off, I'd like to wish you a very Happy 30th birthday. Now, the subject at hand..I thought it would be best to give you future (or past..however you want to look at it..) words of advice and encouragment from your 20 year-old self..
First things first..remember that little quote you put as your motto your senior year of high school?... "Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today."-try applying it!! So far in my life, I haven't gotten anywhere near that spiel of advice. Anyway you can..go do something out of the ordinary (nothing illegal, of course ;-) ) that your quiet, introverted self wouldn't do-go visit another country, if need be-like Rome, for instance..learn of different cultures. Just don't sit idle and watch your life pass by without doing something for yourself.
The second thing..hopefully by now you have succeeded your goal that you made when you first chose your major-history. Hopefully you have made a name for yourself, whether it be by a small margin or a medium-large margin. Just know this-never give up with trying to achieve this goal..even if you haven't yet gotten to this point in your life. As of right now, all I want to do is tell whoever I can what I know about the subject of history. There will be people who really could care less.. but there will be those others that will value the information I am are giving them. Please remember this bit of encouragment-we all know you will need it.
Third..by this point in your life, I am hoping (there's that word again..) that you have made your way out of the city you were born and raised in and gone someplace much different-remember, change is a good thing-if only in moderation. If you are out of this place you once called home..congratulations, I salute you. Maybe by this point in your life you have established not only a new home, but perhaps a family? If so, please tell them these things every day (no matter how frustrated you get with them) 1.) I love you, 2.) You make me proud; be sure to hug and kiss them often throughout the day and raise them to be good individuals who will lead the world to be a better place. Now, if you do not have children, or a significant other..take care of yourself-know that you are appreciated somewhere in the world by someone.
The fourth and final thing..friendship. Friendships are a treasured thing-do not loose grasp of that. Throughout the years, you may loose contact with these people due to getting jobs elsewhere or just simply moving on with your life emotionally..but don't forget that these are the ones that helped influence the person you have turned out to be-for the better. Be sure to look them up, give them a call and catch up on old times and the new.
By the time you get this note of advice, you may think your words were naive or unrealistic, or you may look upon this 10 or so years from now with nostalgia and remember the exact moment you wrote this. Either way you feel, these words of advice will always be with you-use them as you wish.
