So 30 year old me, what's to say... 19 now and confused about life, as we all are. To travel the world, find my perfect woman (though she can hardly be perfect if she changes weekly) and live a happy life in a faraway country...
To run the corporate rings of marketing and to set up my own firm, following the expectations and wishes of society. To never even reach this age?
Hopefully my faith of God will not have been put under too much stress through day to day life by this stage, and my family and friend bonds will hopefully stay strong.
Will I ever make the leap to America? Will I find the knowledge and the escape I so yearn for as I approach my 20th Birthday?
Right now I notice one constant; the more we have grown up, the more we realise we haven't at all. Hopefully you will have finally understood the plague the haunts me of failing to take leaps. My only significant "leaps" has been touring Europe, starting university. If I take no more leaps by the time I read this, then please for your younger and future self, look at your life. Look at what you've accomplished and what you haven't. Are you with the right woman, or the woman of circumstance? Are you in the job YOU want, or the job that's been serendipitously thrust upon you?
And please, write another one of these letters for you in another 10 years, then reread what you have written and ask yourself why you haven't already done these things.
I'm not writing a list of what I want to do or want to have done as nobody can know for sure at 19; part of the notion of "growing up" is to find that - there are many parts to the puzzle of our life; many roads on the journey, the butterfly effect.
Dont settle, change. Dont submit to routine and logic; explode out of your simple life if you've succumbed. You are NOT weak, your mind is stronger than you think it is. If these words shock you because you haven't remembered them or because this is "not you any more" then you are sickening to your younger self, and as far as any logical means can say, I have outgrown you; you have regressed.
But, future Me, if you have accomplished some dreams that I have yet to dream, if you have met this woman that completes me (no, the woman that betters you) if you have some money and some happiness and you travel and make friends and journey and voyage and your life is more adventure than the mundane, if you don't see your life as encapsulated in the concrete castles of industry, but a shining kingdom of life then good. You have lived as I expect to live at least, and any more than that is well done, and I am proud to become you.
Just remember, live by this: "We gave our lives to become the people we are today. Was it worth it?"
Was giving up everything you could have been or done worth becoming the person you are now? Not solely in what you do or what you own, but WHO you are.
You are not small, and reading some of these letters that people write to themselves shocks me at how small they are. "Lose 30 pounds, stop being so sensitive, be nicer". I write wiser words at 19 than they ever will, and at 30 I hope you will have transcended me.
Don't settle, never regret things you did, just the things you didn't. Dont forget the person you wanted to be. Write if you want to write like I did, travel if you want to travel as I did; the world is a book and those who never travel read only 1 page. Dont leave this life unfulfilled at what you never did and kid yourself that you never had "the opportunity". Life is an opportunity, only small people think they can't achieve what they want to achieve because they're "normal". Nobody on Earth is normal!!
On your deathbed; your dying minutes, would you pass with a smile on your face, wife, children and grandkids by your side in some beautiful hotel in Monaco overlooking the ocean, happy in your faith and ready to pass knowing that you lived the life you wanted? If your answer is ANYTHING but yes, then change. Please change. You are more than the sum of your parts.
A 19 year old dreamer.
May you never change.
