Dear FutureMe,
Hey G. I hope you're doing good. It's 2021 and I hope they've finally invented a computer that allows us to download food.
It's an unceremonious Wednesday night 17th August, 2016, I spent the entire day binge watching season 10 of friends, procrastinating on the portfolio. The reason why I thought that this would be the right time to type down my thoughts for my future self is because right now, I'm in the middle. I'm in graduation limbo. I haven't gotten a job yet. I don't know if I'm going to be a good architect. Or a good friend, a daughter or a wife or a musician.(Or a mom? *shudders*) I'm wonderfully lost, I'm a jumble of insecurities and let me tell you that it's a scary place. And I guess it's always going to be that way. What changes is your perspective and how you handle those emotions. (Like a boss, of course.)
Now I'm not assuming that things are just breezy just because you're reading this five years into the future. But I just want you to know that everything will be okay.
I was just going through all the letters everybody has been sending to themselves into the future. "You'd better be in this city". "You'd better get a boyfriend. You'd better have lost weight."
But I don't have to tell you all that. I'm just going to trust my conscience to make the right decisions when I need to the most.
What I will tell you is that what matters to me, right now, as a 22 year old is that you've grown up to be stronger, hard working, honest and kind.
I hope people respect you. Honey, I hope you're doing what you love and I hope that you're with someone who makes you smile everyday and I hope that you're happy. And that if you're not, just change it. It's as simple as that. Things don't have to be complicated unless you make them.
If you have made mistakes, let me tell you that it's okay. Learn to forgive yourself and learn to forgive other people. And most importantly, treat others with love.
And you should know that losing people is a part of life. I do realize that people who are the closest to me right now might not stay or they might. People tend to surprise you. So believe in that. Believe that all these sad things happen for a reason. Right now I'm really sad that my best friend unceremoniously dumped me and I miss her everyday but know that you deserved better and I hope that I have made my peace with that. If she's still in your life, remember how I felt this day. Remember how she made me feel this day.
I hope you're doing good professionally. I hope mom and dad are happy. And I hope that during these five years, you've had some good laughs, you've traveled, you've written some good songs and that you've had some good food. Just know that however this letter is going to reach you in the next five years, make me proud.
Oh, and I almost forgot, Happy 28th Birthday!
